History UFTA

Forestry Training Institute, Haldwani was established in 1st May 1979 with the objective of imparting practical knowledge in the field of forestry to forest officers for enabling them in the scientific management of forests. Till 30th June 1990, trainings were organized for Foresters and Range Officers.

On 1st July 1990, training of Foresters was shifted from FTI, Haldwani to UFTA, Kanpur. Keeping in view significance of Van Panchayats in managing Community Resources as well as outstanding activities of this institute, responsibility of training of ‘Sarpanchs’ of Van Panchayats of Uttarakhand was also handed over to this institute

In 1995 and it was rechristened as Forestry and Van Panchayat Training Institute.

After the formation of Uttaranchal in the year 2002, it was upgraded to Uttaranchal Forestry Training Academy. In 2004, Foresters training was restarted at UFTA, Haldwani. Forest Guards have been imparted training only at Forest Guard Training Institutes of Uttarakhand in Rampur Mandi, Kalagarh and Jainti, Almora in the past. But in 2009, after recruitment of women Forest Guards in Uttarakhand Forest Department, training for women Forest Guards were started in UFTA, Haldwani because of the available infrastructural facilities, while men Forest Guards were continued to be trained at other Institutes. But recently, since its selection for the implementation of JICA project, the academy is gearing up for the regular induction training for Forest Guards also, including both men and women.
